Mike Cotter

Mike began to learn cornet with Eccles Borough Band,in the

1940/50’s, and then moved to the Walkden Band as a youngster

on solo euphonium, from where he realised his ambition and

moved to the World Famous CWS Manchester Band in the

wonderful years of the 60s/70s under the legendary Alex

Mortimer. The CWS band travelled extensively, playing in most of the prestigious venues throughout the UK and overseas, including The Royal Albert Hall in London at many events including The National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain on several occasions.

Since his transition from player to Musical Director, Mike has conducted Brass Bands throughout the UK and abroad, culminating  in many concert and contest successes along the way. His very first band as MD was Darwen British Legion Band, who won the North West Area contest on his conducting debut in 1969, following it up with a 2nd prize at the London National Finals in the same year.

Next year '2019' will be 50 years since those glorious days in 1969 so Mike will be making another attempt at the title 50 years on with Darwen Brass!!

Over the years he has conducted many bands including Fodens, Leyland  Motors, Sun Life (Stanshawe), CWS (Glasgow), Longridge,  Flowers (Gloucester), Camborne, St Austell, Walkden, to name but a few.  His unique type of entertainment shows have been acclaimed with superb reviews wherever they have been performed.

More recently Mike and his friends have formed the 'Walk This Way Choir'  in May 2016, this being a complete change in musical direction. The choir was initially started from members within the 'Walk This Way' walking group back in May 2016, an initiative of the Refresh initiative run by Blackburn with Darwen Council, of which Mike is a member. They have now progressed to a wonderful combination of over 60 members!
